Crittenton Youth Academy :: Special Programs

special programs

Crittenton Youth Academy (CYA) is an NCA-accredited charter school founded on the belief that all students can succeed in school, regardless of their emotional/learning challenges, past school failures or academic deficits.  At CA, students are given one-to-one instruction and individualized programs designed to accommodate their needs, strengths and interests.  The result is a renewed excitement in learning and quicker advancement.

How Can I Help?

Students can graduate from CA or transfer back to a traditional school when they feel comfortable at their grade level. They also have opportunities to participate in a variety of special programs to support their academic and career goals.

Work Skills
The work skills program enables students to gain career related experiences.  It is an elective class that will be offered in the 2007-2008 school year, and will be academically structured in order to align with the Arizona State Standards and credit will be attached.

The practical part of the program will offer students an opportunity to learn skills necessary in the resale/retail business by volunteering at Flo's on 7th. The program will also offer an eye view of the relationship of life today and life in the future. Students will learn the "language of work," and work base learning experiences.

Work Skills Program Goal
return to top of page
The program bridges the gap between the school, the organization and the student's skills by identifying transferable work skills, teaching those skills in a career-focused environment and validating a student's mastery of those skills.

By providing a direct link between the school and the workplace through class work and work-based learning opportunities, the work skills program can improve student motivation and academic performance and prepare students to choose and follow careers in retail, skilled trades, technology and engineering.

Through the strong support of the organization, school and local community, the work skills program combines school-based curricula and opportunities and work-based learning opportunities to encourage effective student participation and development of transferable practical skills such as:

  • Cooperation
  • Integrity
  • Problem-solving
  • Interpersonal relationships
  • Stamina
  • Planning and organizing
  • Decision making
  • Customer service

Service Learning
The Service Learning program at Florence Crittenton offers a unique opportunity for students to find their place in the community.  Students will develop ways to make their communities better by creating their own projects and experience the change firsthand.  Through these activities and projects, Service Learning students will make an impact on the world by developing a deeper understanding of themselves and their communities.

Night School
Crittenton Youth Academy’s night school session offers students an opportunity to attend school and fast track the credits they need to satisfy requirements to graduate. Students who work in the morning, or are parenting, can amend their schedules and include school as a part of their career path. Our motto is, "Get it right at night".
