“I had chosen drugs and the streets over my family, who had once been everything to me.”
When Brittany was growing up, her father was a drug addict and he constantly beat her mother; her mom was an alcoholic. Although Brittany grew up hating drugs, at age 14, she began drinking and using drugs as a way to escape. By what should have been sweet 16, Brittany had dropped out of school, was heavily using meth and committing crimes to feed her growing habit. She was also in an abusive relationship.
The vicious cycle of violence, addiction and abuse came to a screeching halt when Brittany appeared in court with her mother and was detained because of her unsafe home environment. The court eventually referred Brittany to Florence Crittenton’s Detention Alternative Program where she learned how to be herself, how to trust, and how to live (and have fun) sober.
“The day I left jail for Florence Crittenton, I was filled with both happiness and fear, and I didn’t know what to expect. I was welcomed with open arms, and I couldn’t believe how nice everything was!”
Brittany is now 18 and doing very well. Her ongoing relationship with her therapist has helped not only her, but her mother too. They regularly attend AA meetings together, and Brittany continues to celebrate her sobriety.
